Mixed Media & Stitch

These pieces are much smaller in comparison to the larger painted and charcoal pieces, never reaching far above A4 – this is for the practical reason of fitting them under and around a sewing machine. I have worked larger, but the pieces tend to be more abstract so that the distortion is not as obvious. For me, creating these pieces feels like “play” time – I get to make amazing messes with water based paints, passing them off as textures, cut out them out and stick them down, then interweave and embroider glistening threads onto the pieces, and maybe add a sequin or three. At other times I will paint an image and add a tiny bit of stitch as detail, sometimes via the machine or at other times using hand stitching – the piece whispers to me the amount embellishment it requires.
